22C3: The Truth about Nanotechnology
22C3: The Truth about Nanotechnology – Niels Boeing.
Niels Boeing is author of the German book ‘Nano?!’ [1] witch fascinated me about one year ago. He describes the different aspects of the actual state of Nanotechnology, the possibility’s that are already discovered and on the other side dreams that are theories or utopia at the moment.
He also tried to clarify the view on the meaning of the Term ‘Nanotechnology’ (NT) itself. Like he stated in his book NT is a door where all kinds of scientists knock on. There are many ways to this new kind of science, whether a biologist reaches trough investigations in ribosomes or a physician experimenting with Buckyballs and STM. Also the computing and the IT science world already reached this scale of the information age.
During this early evolve of a new technologies it is important to think about the critical parts of this new world or even if there is a real danger to some aspects of our environment. Like in every technology there are always possibilities for abuse and malfunction.
For me the mightiest topic on NT especially for hackers and geeks is to get HANDS ON! Do this now, the time is right and there are different possibilities to investigate in, even in your garage. No high vacuum chamber is necessary nor a operation space near 0 Kelvin. Like back in the early 80th with the C64 you can now join the game for about one thousand Euro to get the ‘hands on at home felling’ [2].
Niels said this to the audience, but I think he was a little bit silent on this. Already there is a massive ongoing in the commercial world, with all withdraws we all know from the software world.. patent, copyrights, proprietary concepts. So come on hackers, we want to dig into this. I’m sure there will be a massive grow of free community that elaborate on this material. The Aha! effect is still missing, also form me, but I’ll try to push this forward.
