22C3 Private Investigations – A Comment on the Keynote of Joi Ito
What is the ticking point of being a hacker in our time? I mean, regarding more the cultural and society components then our classic technical habits.
What is the way our investigations will go? There are many frontiers, a modern hacker need to protect against the development of our time. I mean, regarding more the governments on our globe and the cooperation driven regulation components, then our classic points of contact with local federals.
The way regulation goes is an odd one. The archived concept of democracy turned its way down the river. It got washed away by a massive grow on global markets and the order of so call ‘groups of special interests’. All that on a scale that has nothing to do with the ways of classic corruption.
Joi Ito drew a sketch of the future changes that will undoubtedly come. He outlined where we need to go into deeper Private Investigations to prevent the raise of an inhuman and insane world. 22C3 also means 22 years after the Orwellian year – 1984 – the year where the first congress emerged.
Back than the congress was dedicated to this Utopia. Orwell’s Vision of a total controlled environment and what the, at this time small, impact of computer technologies will do on this story in the future. Here is where we arrived, our present is dramatically impacted by the accelerated innovation of modern technologies. During the old methods begin to fail more and more, it’s about us to define new ways our world can go without dropping century old privileges and rights in a way that is not longer acceptable.
To be more clearly he also underlined that the elementary changes mentioned above are not made by special company or a secret conspiracy. There is no responsible face to point to, no group of long and white beard man sitting around and do some meditation on the doom of the world. These development grows from many roots and has a wide range of different and independent interests behind it.
As an example, the emerge of a digital passport system is a year long process that would eat up million budgets over the time, it’s not one big project by one big nameable thing, like a cooperation or a country or Microsoft. Joi said it in short –
“do not overestimate conspiracy”
So why do these processes run? Why do they run against our, I think mostly rational, understanding of freedom? And damn we are hackers so how could we influent such processes or even take some control of them?
So this should be what this years congress is dedicated to.
We are deep down in the shit – some people say: “We lost the war” – so it’s on time for us to move along with this new situation, like hackers do. The topics are ready stated in Itos papers, in many other Talks here at the Congress and in your own environment regardless where you life.
